The Blessing of the Backpacks is a practice carried out by many churches that acknowledge, and take the time to pray for, students & and teachers returning back to school for another year. A blessing prayer is prayed over students in the congregation and they are given a bag tag that they can attach to their school bag for the year.
Students can be requested the Sunday before to bring their bags and/or wear their uniform to church for this occasion. The blessing can be done either as part of the regular Children's Talk slot in the service, as part of a children/youth led service, or during Sunday school or youth session. Whatever suits the context of your parish.
Making this an annual tradition in your parish is a simple and effective way to highlight the value of children in your congregation. Even if you are a congregation with little-no children and young people, this blessing can still be done with children of your local community in mind.
